Mayumi became a professional music therapist in the year of 2001 and she has been a Board Certified Music Therapist since May 2002. She is currently in private practice in the Greater Boston - south shore area in Massachusetts. She holds a Bachelor of Music/Music Therapy from Berklee College of Music, Boston. Mayumi has worked with individuals ages 6-22 who have multiple physical and cognitive challenges at Massachusetts Hospital School (Canton, MA) between 2000-2005 (including her internship). At Mass. Hospital School, she worked with children and young adults who have spina bifida, cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, and traumatic brain injury in both individual and group music therapy settings. Mayumi has also worked with young children in an early intervention setting where she provided home visit music therapy services. Currently, she provides group music therapy sessions for children ages 3-5 in inclusion classrooms at public schools and individuals sessions for adults who have multiple delays at South Shore Conservatory. Mayumi has presented for music therapy classes at Berklee College of Music and Anna Maria College. Some of her topics include “Music Therapy for Children with Cognitive/Physical Disabilities,” “Music Therapy and Technology,” and "The Use of Technology in Music Therapy." She also has given professional presentations at the National Conference of the American Music Therapy Association , the Regional Conference of the AMTA New England , and Passages Student and New Professional Music Therapy Conference . Her topics include: "Hip Hop Lab," “Pieces of You”: Expression Through Music and Multimedia," and “Where Everything is Music: International Perspectives on Becoming a Music Therapist in America." Mayumi, an accomplished pianist, studied piano methods and performance at Yamaha Music School in Japan starting in her young age. She continued to explore her study in piano at Berklee College of Music along with the study of music therapy. Some of her greatest interests are: utilizing technology and including multicultural activities in music therapy. Mayumi likes to stay updated with the latest developments in music therapy and she also maintains $1,000,0000 in profesional liability insurace.
